Soap Used in Everyday Life

What is Soap-Making Chemical?

Soaps have a variety of uses. They are used for washing, bathing, and other cleaning purpose in our life. In industries, they are used as thickeners, components of lubricants, and as precursors to catalysts. When used as cleaning agents, soaps solubilize particles, making it easier for them to be separated from the article being cleaned. In the washing of hands, it is a surfactant and kills microorganisms. Humans have used soap for millennia, with the production of soap-like materials dating back up to 2800 BC in the ancient Babylonian empire.

The fat in the soap might be from either plant or animal sources, while the alkali is called 'Lye'. The chemical reaction between lye and oil to give soap is called saponification. Without lye, saponification is not possible, so lye is a necessary ingredient to create soap. Bar soap and liquid soap require different types of lye, for bar soap, the lye is sodium hydroxide while in liquid soap-making, the lye is potassium hydroxide. Lye, on its own, is a very corrosive substance that can be irritating to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract, but when it is done properly, saponification turns lye into soap without leaving any lye remnants.

Soap-making chemicals are the chemical compounds that are used in the process of saponification. Soap-making is an ancient practice that is done both industrially and on a small scale. The steps used today are not too different from the ones used years ago. However, the specific types of ingredients used vary from soap to soap. The basic ingredients are lye, oil, and a choice of fragrance. Different kinds of oils are used in soap production, including canola oil, palm oil, and olive oil.

Soap is made in two processes; one is the cold process, where soap is made with the application of external heat; the other is the hot process, where soap is heated or cooked in a crockpot to speed up the soap-making process. Soap-making requires carefulness, and the lye must be handled with the utmost caution. Wearing protective gloves and eye goggles is advised when handling lye, as it is corrosive and can pose a significant level of danger. Soap-making chemicals are those chemicals that find good use in making your desired soap.

1. Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic Soda)

Sodium Hydroxide available for sale on Camachem.

Sodium Hydroxide.

Sodium hydroxide, also known as Caustic Soda, is a white crystalline solid. It is a substance that absorbs moisture readily until it dissolves, commonly called caustic soda. It is a highly corrosive substance. It has the chemical formula NaOH. It is also called lye by some people. It is highly soluble in water.

Chemical Applications of Sodium Hydroxide

Sodium Hydroxide is a particularly efficient chemical compound in the chemical industry due to its wide variety of industrial applications. Its strengths include neutralizing strong acids due to its character as a strong base. It is a cheaper alternative to potassium hydroxide in soap making and is also easier to store and transport.

Its other applications and strengths are:

  • Used in the manufacture of detergents.
  • Used in the manufacture of sodium salts.
  • Used to increase the alkalinity of a mixture or neutralize acids.
  • Used to increase mud viscosity.
  • Used in salt spray testing to regulate pH.
  • Used to treat poor quality crude oil by removing its sulfurous impurities.
  • Used as drain cleaner.
  • Used for making artificial textile fibers like Rayon.
  • Used in the manufacture of paper.
  • Used in purifying bauxite ore, from which aluminum metal is extracted.
  • Used in water treatment plants for pH regulation.
  • It is used in the treatment of bagels and pretzel dough and gives off a distinct, shiny finish.
  • It is used as a catalyst in the manufacture of biodiesel.

What are the different types of Sodium Hydroxide?

There are three types of Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic Soda) that we have available:

2. Sodium Carbonate

Sodium Carbonate available for sale on Camachem.

Sodium Carbonate

Sodium Carbonate, also known as Soda Ash, is an inorganic chemical substance that is white, odorless, and water-soluble. It is also known as “washing soda”. It has various hydrate forms; all the forms are similar in appearance.

Chemical Applications of Sodium Carbonate

Sodium carbonate is a particularly efficient chemical compound in the chemical industry due to its wide variety of industrial applications. It is an inexpensive, weak base that is preferred to sodium hydroxide because it is safer to handle. Its mildness allows it to be recommended for domestic use.

Its other applications and strengths are:

  • Used as a cleansing agent for domestic purposes.
  • It is a material for many dry soap powders.
  • It is used for the removal of temporary and permanent hardness of water.
  • It is used in glass manufacturing companies.
  • It is used in paper manufacturing companies.
  • Used to manufacture sodium compounds, such as Borax.
  • It is used in the manufacture of rayon polymers.
  • It is used in chemical synthesis, especially in the Solvay process.
  • It is found in toothpaste as an abrasive.

Sodium Carbonate (Soda Ash) Light

What are the different types of Sodium Carbonate?

There Sodium Carbonate (Soda Ash) that we have available:

3. Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) available for sale on Camachem.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) is an anionic detergent and surfactant that is present in many personal care products and for other industrial uses. It is a very effective foaming agent. Its full name is Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate, and it is also called Sodium Alkyl Ether Sulfate.

Chemical Applications of Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

Sodium Laureth Sulfate is a particularly efficient chemical compound in the chemical industry due to its wide variety of industrial applications. Its strength is its ability to form rich a lather, and it possesses intense cleaning abilities. Its other applications and strengths are:

  • It is used as a surfactant.
  • It is used in cosmetics due to its cleaning and emulsifying properties.
  • It is used in herbicides to improve the absorption of herbicidal chemicals.
  • It is used in soaps as an effective foaming agent.

We have Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) 70% available for purchase.

4. Sulfonic Acid (LABSA)

Sulfonic Acid (LABSA) available for sale on Camachem.

Sulfonic Acid (LABSA)

Sulfonic Acid (LABSA) is an anionic surfactant with a hydrophilic and hydrophobic group on each of its molecules. The process of sulfonation is used to create this nonvolatile chemical compound. The chemical and physical properties of Sulfonic Acid (LABSA) vary depending on the length of the alkyl chain. As a result, formulations are created, which have a wide range of applications.

Chemical Applications of Sulfonic Acid (LABSA)

Because of its low cost and high performance, Sulfonic Acid (LABSA) is one of the most widely used synthetic surfactants.  This chemical is biodegradable and safe for the environment.

In soap-making, LABSA is typically used in the production of liquid soap. It could be used to neutralize the effect of base chemicals in soap making, such as Sodium Hydroxide. Its other applications and strengths are:

  • It is used to manufacture detergents such as washing powder, detergent powder, oil soap and cleaning powder
  • It is commonly used in household cleaning products.
  • It is used to in manufacturing antibacterial drug called Sulphonamide (also called as Sulfa Drugs).

We have Sulfonic Acid (LABSA) available for purchase. Our customers use our chemicals to help with soap making and manufacture and rely on us at Camachem to consistently supply high-quality chemicals.
