Chemical Description

  • Isobutyl methacrylate (IBMA) comes under organic compounds, its chemical formula is C8H14O2. It also comes under the methacrylate esters family and is formed with a double bond between carbon and oxygen atoms in the group of esters.
  • It is a colorless liquid with a fruity odor, has a very low melting point of -80 degrees Celsius and a very high boiling point of approximately 142 degrees Celsius. The weight of the molecules of isobutyl methacrylate is almost 142.2 grams per molecule.
  • It has a flashpoint of -37 °C.
  • IBMA is insoluble in water but is soluble in various organic solvents including ethanol and acetone.
  • Isobutyl methacrylate polymerases easily under suitable conditions and forms various polymers that have a wide range of applications.
  • IBMA is mainly used in industries to make polymers and copolymers such as acrylic resins, coatings, adhesives and elastomers. Also, the properties that IBMA possesses makes it very suitable for applications that require flexibility, weather resistance and most importantly durability.
  • It is widely used for automotive coatings, construction materials such as paint and various medical devices.
  • Isobutyl methacrylate can be very risky for health if inhaled or if it has been ingested. It causes various skin diseases like irritation of skin and other allergic reactions when it has been in contact with bare skin. It can also cause problems to the eyes if it comes in contact with the eyes.
  • It is very crucial to store and use IBMA in a proper way to avoid all the hazards that can be caused by it.
  • IBMA when released into the environment can compromise the air quality and cause implications to the air, water and soil. The disposal of the IBMA must be managed in such a way that it is not harmful to the nature and improve the sustainability of the environment.
