Chemical Description

  • Surface coatings, as on household appliances and gas storage vessels; adhesive for composites and for metals, glass, and ceramics; casting metal forming tools and dies; encapsulation of electrical parts; filament-wound pipe and pressure vessels; floor surf.
  • Resin based on epichlorohydrin and bisphenol A. Oligomers may vary in molecular weight from 340 and higher. May produce erythema multiforme like eruptions. The higher the molecular weight, the less sensitizing the compound.
  • The condensation leaves epoxy end groups that are then reacted in a separate step with nucleophilic compounds (alcohols, acids, or amines).
  • For use as an adhesive, the epoxy resin and the curing resin (usually an aliphatic polyamine) are packaged separately and mixed together immediately before use.
  • Epoxy novolac resins are produced by glycidation of the low-molecular-weight reaction products of phenol (or cresol) with formaldehyde. Highly cross-linked systems are formed that have superior performance at elevated temperatures.
  • Polyepichlorohydrin (PECh) is a synthetic polymer made up of many repeating units of chlorine, epichlorohydrin, and polyethylene glycol. It is produced by the reaction of epichlorohydrin with polyethylene glycol in the presence of a catalyst. PECh is used in a variety of applications, including as a coating for medical devices, as a plasticizer for plastics, and as a stabilizer for pharmaceuticals. It is also used in the synthesis of other polymers or co-polymers. PECh has a wide range of properties, including excellent heat resistance, good adhesion to other materials, and good electrical insulation.

Its improved durability and permanent electrical properties make it superior to competitive rubber and vinyl materials in applications like electrostatic discharge (ESD) mats. These mats demonstrate enhanced resistance to heat, ozone, solvents, and UV exposure.
