Chemical Description

  • Triethanolamine is an amine compound. Tri (2-hydroxyethyl) amine, which can be seen as a trihydroxyl substitute for triethylamine.
  • Similar to other amines, triethanolamine is weakly basic due to the presence of lone pair electrons on the nitrogen atom and can react with inorganic or organic acids to form salts.
  • It is a colorless transparent liquid with a slightly ammonia odor and, at low temperatures, becomes a colorless to light yellow cubic crystal.
  • TEA turns to dew darkness when it is exposed to air.
  • It is easily soluble in water, ethanol, acetone, glycerol, and ethylene glycol, slightly soluble in benzene, ether, and carbon tetrachloride, and almost insoluble in non-polar solvents.
  • It's stimulating and hygroscopic.
  • It can absorb carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and other acidic gasses.
  • TEA is used as an emulsifier, moisturizer, humidifier, thickener, and PH balancer in cosmetics, including skin washing, eye gel, moisturizer, shampoo, etc.
  • Adding triethanolamine to liquid detergent can improve oily dirt removal, especially non-polar sebum. At the same time, improving the alkaline can improve the decontamination performance. It has excellent compatibility.
  • It is used as a curing agent of epoxy resin, reference dosage of 12-15 parts (mass fraction), curing conditions 80ºC/4h or 120ºC/2h.
  • It can also be used for natural rubber, synthetic rubber vulcanization activator, and nitrile rubber polymerization activator.
  • It can also be used as lubricating oil and anti-corrosion additives.
  • The long-chain fatty acid salts of triethanolamine are almost neutral and can be used as emulsifiers for oils and waxes.
  • It is used in the textile industry as a good solvent and hygroscopic agent. It's also an ingredient in fabric softeners.
  • It can reduce the surface tension between two substances, aiding in emulsification and dispersion.
  • It is flammable when exposed to high temperatures. It should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place.
  • The industrial grade TEA is available in 230 Kg drums, 1000 Kg IBC drums and in ISO tanks.
