Problems Faced in Sodium Cyanide
The company had been purchasing the chemicals from an expensive local supplier. Once they realized that they could get the same chemicals at better quality and more affordable pricing, they reached out to Camachem.
The company wanted to find a simple method of exporting the chemicals. They wanted to get the chemicals directly from the supplier and eliminate middlemen from the procurement process. This would save them time and money, and assure them of getting quality products.
What is sodium cyanide and how is it used?
- Sodium cyanide, sometimes known as NaCN, is a cyanide salt, a sodium salt, and a one-carbon compound. It's also known as Cyanide of Sodium, or Cyanobrik. It is very toxic and interferes with a variety of metabolic functions. It is frequently utilized as a test reagent for chemoreceptor function and in industrial operations.
- To produce NaCN, neutralize hydrogen cyanide (HCN) using aqueous sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution, then evaporative crystallize the resulting slurry of NaCN crystals, which may then be removed from the slurry and dried. It was previously produced through the Castner method, which involved the reaction of sodium amide with carbon at high temperatures.
- Common applications of sodium cyanide include its use in fumigation, dye production, steel hardening, in coal gasification, as a source of hydrogen cyanide and in the refinement of gold, silver, zinc, and lead. Sodium cyanide is used in the extraction of gold since gold is highly reactive to cyanide.
- Non-traditional uses of sodium cyanide are employed for sterilization, control of nuisance vegetation, and elimination of predators of fry (juvenile fish).
