Chemical Description
- Dimethylamine is a colorless, flammable gas at room temperature and is marketed in compressed liquid form.
- It has a pungent, fishy, or ammonia-like odor at room temperature.
- Dimethylamine is highly soluble in water, alcohol, and ether.
- It is incompatible with oxidizing materials, acrylaldehyde, fluorine, maleic anhydride, chlorine, or mercury.
- DMA is a precursor to several industrially important compounds. It is used in the manufacture of several products, such as rubber vulcanization, detergent soaps, leather tanning, pharmaceuticals, and cellulose acetate rayon treatment.
- Dimethylamine reacts readily with acids to produce salts due to the presence of the unshared electron pair on the nitrogen atom.
- Dimethylamine is used in the manufacture of N-methylformamide, N-methylacetamide, and detergent soaps in tanning and as an accelerator in vulcanizing rubber.
- DMA is used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, as a stabilizer in gasoline, in the production of insecticides and fungicides, and in the manufacture of soaps and surfactants.
- Dimethylamine is used as a precursor to several industrially significant compounds.
- It reacts with carbon disulfide to give dimethyl dithiocarbamate, a precursor to a family of chemicals widely used in rubber vulcanization.
- It is a raw material for the production of many agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals, such as dimefox and diphenhydramine etc.
- It is used as a solution in water at concentrations up to around 40% because it is extremely flammable in the pure form and is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents.
- DMA is temperature sensitive; it reacts vigorously with mercury and chlorine. Furthermore, it reacts violently with strong oxidizing agents and attacks copper and copper compounds.
- Due to its high flammability, it is used in electroplating as gasoline stabilizers, missile fuels, and rocket propellants.
- It is recommended to store Dimethylamine in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area in tightly sealed containers. It must be labeled as a “Highly Flammable Liquid.”
- This highly flammable liquid is available in 150 Kg drum packaging.
